Construction began in December 1943 to replace the former Modelo Prison that previously occupied the site. The building was completed in 1958 during Spain's post-war reconstruction period.
The building exhibits Herrerian architecture, a style derived from the El Escorial monastery that became prevalent in Spanish governmental structures.
The complex is located within the city and can be viewed from outside, with its architectural design visible from multiple vantage points. Keep in mind that this is an active military facility and interior access is restricted.
Architect Luis Gutiérrez Soto traveled to Rome and Berlin to study similar military complexes before designing this building. His international research influenced the final design during a period of Spain's limited international connections.
