Museo Jovellanos

Museo Jovellanos is a museum in the Cimadevilla district of Gijón housed in a stately house featuring two towers. The collection comprises approximately 650 artworks from Asturian art spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, including paintings, prints, and sculptures by various artists.

The building was constructed in the late 15th century and underwent renovations in the 16th century and again in 1758, before it became the birthplace of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. This architectural history makes it an important record of Gijón's building development across several centuries.

The museum displays manuscripts, books, and personal belongings that reveal how this important thinker lived and worked. The exhibition spaces also feature works by regional artists such as Dionisio Fierros Álvarez, reflecting the artistic production of Asturias.

The museum is located in the oldest part of Gijón, where narrow streets and historic facades help visitors find the site easily. The rooms are housed in a historic building with uneven floors, so comfortable footwear is helpful for navigation.

An adjacent chapel houses the mausoleum of Jovellanos and displays a collection of Goya prints donated by Carmen and Severo Ochoa. This art historical connection links two major figures of Spanish cultural history in a single location.
