Faro de Cudillero

Faro de Cudillero is a white lighthouse tower perched on a rocky point along the northern Spanish coast overlooking the sea. The structure features a simple tower with attached keeper's quarters and is now appreciated by visitors for its views and location above the water.

The lighthouse was built in 1858 and replaced an earlier signal fire system run by local women to warn ships of danger. Since then it has undergone various technical upgrades, from using oil as fuel to electricity to keep vessels safe on these waters.

The site holds deep connections to the fishing community and shows how the sea has shaped local life and identity over generations. Visitors can observe this bond through the traditional boats and the way the village maintains its maritime heritage.

The site sits on a high cliff with strong winds and occasionally rough conditions, so sturdy footwear is important to stay safe. The path to the viewpoint is short but can be steep in places, making sensible footwear and a moderate level of fitness useful.

Before the lighthouse existed, women from the village organized a fire-warning system to alert sailors of treacherous cliffs, an uncommon role for women at that time. This unusual practice shows how local women played a vital part in maritime safety long before the tower was built.
