Campofrío and Aguilar Beaches, Protected beach system in Asturias, Spain
Campofrío and Aguilar are two connected beaches on the Asturian coast stretching about 640 meters of shoreline and featuring golden sand alongside rocky formations. The western section is more rocky while the eastern part offers wider sandy stretches.
The beaches gained protection status because of their importance as nesting grounds for local bird populations. This recognition led to their designation as a special protection area and site of community importance.
The beach divides into two sections with different traditions: Campofrío welcomes naturists while Aguilar follows conventional beach customs. This split identity shapes how each part functions and who feels at home in each space.
Access is available year-round, though summer months bring lifeguard services, accessible facilities, and parking areas. Each beach section has different rules about how it is used, so visitors should check locally before arriving.
At low tide, a hidden beach emerges through La Cueva, a natural cave opening at the western end of Aguilar that few visitors discover. This passage reveals itself only briefly, making it a fleeting surprise for those paying attention to tidal changes.
