Church of Santa María la Mayor, Pravia

The Church of Santa María la Mayor in Pravia is a Baroque structure with three naves intersected by a transept and crowned with a hemispherical dome. Three rounded arches form the entrance of this stone building.

The building was founded in 1715 by Fernando Ignacio de Arango Queipo after he returned from the colony of Charcas in the Viceroyalty of Peru. Arango Queipo vowed to build this church after praying for rescue during a sea storm.

The main altarpiece shows the Virgin of Valle statue alongside scenes of the Assumption and the Adoration of the Magi. These religious figures and sacred images reflect the devotion that this place holds for the local community.

The church maintains regular visiting hours from Monday through Saturday between 11:30 and 13:30, with audio guides available for visitors. It is recommended to check these hours before visiting, especially on holidays or during special events.

The Baroque organ inside the church was recently restored and holds the status of Cultural Interest Asset. Its music sounds during special occasions and showcases the craftsmanship from that era.
