Cave of Candamo, Prehistoric cave art site in San Román, Spain
The limestone cave contains multiple chambers displaying animal paintings and engravings, including representations of aurochs, horses, bison, and deer on its walls.
Local inhabitants knew about the cave in the late 19th century, but it was officially discovered in 1914 by Eduardo Hernández Pacheco and Count La Vega del Sella.
The cave functioned as a ceremonial space rather than a dwelling place, with artistic activities spanning from 24,000 BC to 8,000 BC in the Upper Paleolithic period.
Visitors can access the cave from June 15th to September 15th and during Holy Week, with daily tours limited to 45 people divided into three groups.
A single caramel-colored horse painting occupies an elevated position in the main chamber, suggesting potential religious importance to prehistoric communities.
