Serra de Bèrnia, Mountain range in Alicante province, Spain
Serra de Bèrnia is a mountain range in Alicante province that runs east to west and reaches 1,128 meters at its highest point. The ridge separates different valleys and contains the notable passage of El Forat, which is crossed by a popular hiking route.
The mountain range played a strategic role in coastal defense, leading to the construction of a fortress in the 16th century. This fortification was later abandoned as military needs changed.
Shepherds historically crossed the natural tunnel El Forat with their flocks to move between different sides of the mountain. This passage was essential to how people used the land.
A circular hiking route around the mountain measures about 9 kilometers and takes four to five hours, with starting points in nearby villages. The terrain is hilly and requires a decent fitness level plus good footwear for traction.
El Forat is a natural passage carved by water over time that forces hikers to crawl through it. This underground channel connects two valleys on either side of the ridge.
