Trenet de la Marina, Historic narrow-gauge railway in Costa Blanca, Spain
The Trenet de la Marina is a narrow-gauge railway along the Costa Blanca that stretches nearly 100 kilometers from Alicante to Denia, crossing the coast through mountain tunnels and bridges. The network links several coastal towns and follows the natural landscape of the region.
The railway began in 1902 under Jose Carbonell's direction and grew in phases, with different sections opening between October 1914 and July 1915 from Alicante's Marina Station. This gradual expansion reflects the challenges of building a line through difficult mountain terrain.
The station in Denia displays photographs, paintings, and documents showing how the railway shaped the region's communities across generations. The collection tells stories of daily life and how people used this connection to link their coastal villages together.
The journey from Alicante to Denia takes two and a half hours, with electric trains running between Alicante and Benidorm and diesel trains serving the section to Denia. Visitors should check in advance which train type operates on their chosen route.
The train section between Altea and Calpe passes through the Mascarat mountains and offers views of Campomanes port and the distinctive Peon de Ifach rock formation. This route is known for its tight curves and dramatic elevation changes.
