Marjal dels Moros

Marjal dels Moros is a protected wetland between Sagunto and Puçol that contains freshwater and brackish habitats. The site spans around 1,200 hectares and forms a important landscape between the Mediterranean coast and industrial zones of the Valencia region.

The site was shaped by rice cultivation for many years, though this practice declined significantly in the 1990s. The Valencian regional government acquired approximately 800 hectares in 1996 to establish protection.

The site draws school groups and nature enthusiasts who observe wetland ecosystems and water cycles firsthand. People come here to understand how this landscape works and why its protection matters.

The site is accessible through marked paths that offer clear views of water bodies and bird watching opportunities year-round. Visitors should prepare for damp conditions and expect varying bird populations depending on the season.

The wetland marks the northernmost European breeding location for the marbled teal and supports critical populations of red-crested pochards. These rare bird species make it a vital refuge for birds that are harder to find elsewhere.
