Iñurritza

Iñurritza is a protected natural area on the Basque coast that combines salt marshes, dunes, forests, and beaches creating multiple habitats in close proximity. The landscape shifts between open water areas and vegetated sections, with trails and viewing spots allowing visitors to reach the key zones.

This zone was officially protected in 1997 when regional authorities recognized that this coastal stretch was vital for animal and plant life. The decision was part of a broader effort to safeguard natural areas across the Basque region that was gaining momentum at the time.

Bird watchers and nature lovers come here regularly to observe the migratory species that pass through twice each year. The area attracts local school groups and environmental organizations that visit to learn about coastal life and its protection.

The easiest way to explore is to follow the marked walking paths that start at different points and wind through the various sections. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time for a slow pace, as the ground can be muddy and waterlogged in places.
