Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís

Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís, Baroque church in Alameda de Colón, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís is a church with a Baroque facade located at Alameda de Colón in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, built in traditional Canarian style. The interior divides into three naves with ornate wooden ceilings showing Mudéjar patterns and impressive stone details throughout.

An original monastery building from 1518 was destroyed during Dutch attacks and later rebuilt through work by architects Juan Lucero starting in 1635 and Juan Báez starting in 1652. These phases shaped the structure as it appears today and defined its building history.

The church holds many religious artworks that draw worshippers and visitors, including a revered statue of Our Lady of Solitude and a 17th-century piece by José de Arce. These pieces shape how people experience the interior and reflect the place's artistic importance to the community.

Visitors can explore the church on most weekdays to view the architectural elements and religious artworks on display. It helps to be mindful of active services so you can experience how the space is actually used and respected.

The attached monastery garden once served as a testing ground for growing vegetable varieties that later traveled to the Americas during colonial expansion. This historical role connects the place to early modern trade routes and cross-cultural exchange.
