Font d'Hèrcules, Neoclassical fountain in Gràcia, Barcelona, Spain
Font d'Hèrcules is a neoclassical marble fountain in Gràcia featuring a central statue of Hercules holding the Nemean lion skin, set on a pedestal with two stone lions flanking the base. An oval medallion with portraits provides additional detail to the composition.
Salvador Gurri created this fountain in 1797 to commemorate a royal visit and marriage. The work emerged during a period when neoclassical monuments were gaining importance throughout Europe.
The fountain displays Barcelona's connection to Greek mythology through the hero Hercules and reflects classical themes that were common in Spanish public monuments. This mythological choice shows how ancient stories influenced the city's artistic expression during that era.
The fountain stands in a pedestrian area and is easily accessible, with multiple transportation options serving the broader Barcelona region. This location makes it simple to visit the monument while exploring the neighborhood.
This work is the sole surviving remnant from a series of four fountains that once decorated the promenade between Barcelona's old city and its citadel. The other three have long since disappeared.
