Castell de les Espases

Castell de les Espases is a medieval castle in Esparreguera positioned on rocky terrain near the Llobregat River. The structure includes a circular tower and remaining walls that follow the natural contours of the site, creating a fortified position adapted to the landscape.

The castle appears in records from 985, when Count Borrell sold it to Guillemos. The Benedictine monastery of Montserrat acquired the fortress in 1351 and incorporated it into their defensive network.

The chapel displays Gothic features with a rectangular apse that was modified in the 1500s. These changes show how religious spaces evolved during that period.

The site requires sturdy footwear due to its steep cliffs at the intersection of San Feliu and Vich dioceses. Visitors should consider weather conditions, especially during rain or wind when surfaces become slippery.

Archaeological excavations have revealed Romanesque walls from the 12th century integrated into the southern side of the fortress. These remains show that earlier architectural foundations supported the later medieval construction.
