Aeri de Montserrat, Aerial tramway in Montserrat, Spain

The Aeri de Montserrat is an aerial tramway spanning 1357 meters across the rocky slopes, connecting the base station to the monastery perched at 682 meters elevation. The system carries passengers up the steep mountainside using overhead cables, creating a direct route between valley and summit.

The cable car began operation in 1930 as the primary transportation link between the valley and the mountaintop monastery. Since then it has carried generations of visitors and worshippers on their ascent.

The cable car serves as a vital passage for pilgrims and visitors heading to the Benedictine monastery and its revered Black Madonna. This connection between valley and summit allows people to reach a site of deep spiritual importance.

The ride takes about five minutes, allowing visitors to gain elevation quickly without having to navigate the steep climb on foot. Tickets can be purchased in combination with train journeys from Barcelona, and the frequency of departures keeps wait times minimal.

The cabin design allows passengers to see the Llobregat river valley from almost every angle during the ascent, offering views in all directions. This open perspective makes the journey about more than just reaching the top.
