Royal Arms Factory of Orbaizeta

The Royal Arms Factory of Orbaizeta is a stone industrial complex arranged across three levels on a mountain slope, integrating furnaces, workshops, and water channels that powered the machinery. The facility was designed to take advantage of the local resources available - iron ore, flowing water, and timber from the surrounding forest.

The Spanish Crown established this weapons factory in 1784 to secure domestic military supply and ammunition production. The facility operated for exactly one century until it closed in 1884 when production methods advanced elsewhere.

The factory served as a self-contained community where workers and their families lived in company housing alongside the production facilities. This model shows how industrial work and domestic life were deeply integrated in the late 1700s.

The site is freely accessible and can be visited at any time, though guided tours are available through the local tourism office for more detailed information. The location is quite remote within the forest, so wear sturdy footwear and allow time to explore the scattered ruins across the different levels.

Though the factory ceased operations long ago, its water channels remain visible across the site and continue to influence the ecology of the surrounding forest. These systems show how ingenious engineering transformed the landscape itself to enable production in such a remote location.
