Zumaia Lighthouse

Zumaia Lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower standing on Mount San Telmo that helps vessels navigate into the river estuary. The structure features solid masonry construction and operates with a modern signaling system to guide traffic at sea.

The structure was built in 1882 and replaced an earlier version from 1870 that proved difficult to reach. Its design followed plans created by engineer Francisco Lafarga.

The structure is woven into the local maritime identity and reflects the historical importance of fishing and shipping for the town. Visitors walking along the coast can sense how central this landmark was to the daily lives of those who worked at sea.

The tower sits on a hillside at the edge of town with a broad view over the bay. Sturdy footwear is helpful since the path to reach it crosses uneven ground.

A rotating screen system was installed in 1925 by a machinery manufacturer from Valencia. This technical upgrade made the light signals more visible to ships at greater distances.
