Itzurun, Golden sand urban beach in Zumaia, Spain.
Itzurun is a sandy beach in Zumaia, on the Basque coast of northern Spain, enclosed on both sides by tall vertical cliffs. The sand runs along the base of these rock walls and opens directly to the sea, giving the beach a narrow, sheltered shape.
The cliffs surrounding Itzurun are part of a coastal formation where rock layers going back millions of years have been exposed by the sea. These strata were gradually uncovered by wave erosion over a very long period, leaving a visible record of geological change in the cliff faces.
Itzurun draws surfers who ride the waves near the base of the cliffs, while families tend to settle on the sand closer to the center of the beach. The two groups share the space naturally, giving the beach a relaxed but active feel on most summer days.
The beach is easy to reach on foot from the center of Zumaia, and parking is available close by. Showers, restrooms, and lifeguard service are on site during the summer season.
The cliffs around Itzurun were used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, which brought the beach to the attention of many viewers who had never heard of Zumaia before. Fans of the series often walk the shoreline looking for angles they recognize from specific scenes.
