The town of Zumaia sits between the Bay of Biscay and mountains, featuring two beaches with distinctive geological formations called flysch.
Established in 1347, Zumaia grew around the Monastery of Santa Maria, which protected inhabitants from frequent pirate attacks along the coast.
The San Pedro church displays Basque-Gothic architecture in the town center, representing the regional architectural style of the medieval period.
Tourists can access geological guided tours throughout the year to examine the 100-million-year-old rock formations at Itzurun and Santiago beaches.
The Cretaceous-Paleogene Stratigraphic Section received recognition from the International Union of Geological Sciences in October 2022.
