Ponte das Pías, Bridge in Ferrol estuary, Spain.
Ponte das Pías is a road bridge spanning the Ferrol estuary with four traffic lanes connecting Fene and Ferrol. The structure carries vehicles across the water between these two Galician municipalities.
The bridge opened in 1968, replacing boat traffic as the main connection between the two municipalities. A collision with an oil platform in 1998 led to major renovation work that expanded its capacity.
The name comes from ancient megalithic graves called pías, discovered in the Perlío area near Fene, which give this crossing its distinctive identity.
The bridge operates with varying speed limits across different sections, so drivers should pay attention to posted regulations. Weather conditions over the estuary can affect crossing comfort, particularly when wind is strong.
An offshore oil platform crashed into the bridge in 1998, causing extensive damage that prompted a complete reconstruction. This incident fundamentally changed the structure, doubling its width and capacity.
