Mercado de Chamberí, Madrid, Municipal marketplace in Chamberí district, Madrid, Spain.
Mercado de Chamberí is a market hall in a Madrid neighborhood with several food stalls selling regional products and fresh items. The building combines ground-floor retail with other functions in the upper levels.
The market hall was founded in 1876 as one of Madrid's new market facilities in a growing neighborhood. After damage and decline, it was thoroughly renewed in the middle of the 20th century and returned to public use.
The market took its name from a legendary gardener who worked in this neighborhood, reflecting the district's long trading tradition. Visitors can still experience the traditional character of a Spanish market hall where neighbors and regular customers meet.
The location is accessible on weekdays and Saturdays with different opening times depending on the time of day. It is best explored on foot, and visitors should allow time to move freely through the different areas.
Above the market level sits a fitness center with a swimming pool, giving the building an unexpected dual purpose. This mixed use shows how historic market buildings in big cities retain meaning and adapt to modern needs.
