The stone remains of Santa María de Nogales monastery stand near the Eria River, showing elements of Romanesque architecture from the 12th century.
Emperor Alfonso VII of León granted the Villa de Nogales to nobleman Vela Gutiérrez and his wife Sancha Ponce de Cabrera in 1149.
The monastery contains burial sites of notable Spanish nobility, including Suero de Quiñones and his wife Elvira de Zúñiga, whose statues now reside in New York.
The monastery site, included in the Red List of Endangered Heritage, requires immediate conservation measures to prevent further deterioration of its structures.
Two decorative boxes from the monastery, dating between 1250 and 1380, are currently displayed at the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona.
