Peace Dove, Metal sculpture at Zurriola Beach, Spain.
The Peace Dove is a metal sculpture with extended wings measuring 9 meters wide and 7 meters tall, standing at the eastern end of Zurriola Beach against the Cantabrian Sea. The structure combines metal framework with polyester fiber elements.
The sculpture was created in 1980 by Basque artist Nestor Basterretxea, shaped by experiences of exile. It emerged from his personal call against violence in the region.
The sculpture shows San Sebastian's commitment to peace through public art on its waterfront. It exists alongside other outdoor installations that visitors encounter while walking along the coast.
The sculpture sits at the eastern end of Zurriola, easily reached via the coastal promenade from the beach. Access is open at any time, allowing visitors to walk by freely at their convenience.
The sculpture was purposefully built from durable materials to withstand the strong coastal winds and salt spray of the Cantabrian Sea. This material choice has proven essential for its survival on the exposed beach.
