La Loteta reservoir, stuwmeer in Aragón, Spanje
La Loteta is a reservoir in the province of Zaragoza, in Aragon, built to store water for the surrounding region. It sits in a wide, open valley surrounded by farmland and low hills, with a large surface exposed to the sky and wind.
Construction started in the late 1990s and was completed in 2008, with the reservoir beginning to fill in 2009. The project was designed to support the water supply of Zaragoza, but problems emerged shortly after it came into use.
The reservoir sits in a windy area today used by water sports enthusiasts and people seeking outdoor activities. The open landscape shapes how visitors experience the place, whether they come to walk, bike, or simply spend time by the water.
The reservoir is best reached by car along country roads, and the surrounding area offers plenty of open space to walk or spend time outdoors. The steady winds make it a known spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, so expect activity on the water on breezy days.
After filling, the water turned out to contain salt levels too high for use as drinking water, which was the original purpose of the project. Today the reservoir is mainly used to irrigate farm fields, a very different role from what was planned when it was built.
