La República, Bronze sculpture in Nou Barris district, Barcelona, Spain

La República is a bronze figure standing on a steel base at Plaça de Llucmajor in the Nou Barris district, positioned where three major avenues meet. The monument includes a marble medallion portrait integrated into its design.

The monument was created in 1934 but removed from its original location in 1939 during a period of political suppression. It remained absent from public view until its restoration many years later.

The statue depicts a nude female figure wearing a Phrygian cap, her arm raised and holding a laurel branch, modelled on Mercè Gallén Ibáñez. The monument also carries a marble relief medallion of Pi i Margall by Joan Pie. The square was renamed Plaça de la República on 14 April 2016, the day the Second Republic was proclaimed in 1931, after a long neighbourhood campaign.

The monument stands on a traffic roundabout at Plaça de la República, so it cannot be reached on foot and is seen from the surrounding pavements and crossings. The square lies where Passeig de Valldaura, Carrer de la República and Avinguda de Rio de Janeiro converge in Nou Barris, and the 30-metre steel structure is visible from a distance.

The 1934 statue was modelled on Mercè Gallén Ibáñez, a detail the sources record but the monument itself does not show. The figure holds a laurel branch aloft with a raised arm and wears a Phrygian cap. Its sculptor, Josep Viladomat, won the 1932 public competition that discarded Miquel Blay's earlier bust project.
