Monasterio de Santa Ana, Badajoz, Franciscan monastery in historic center, Badajoz, Spain.
Monasterio de Santa Ana is a Franciscan monastery in Badajoz's historic center with two main facades and a stone coat of arms carved in 1771. The complex includes a cloister and religious spaces decorated with historical artworks and architectural features.
Leonor Laso de la Vega y Figueroa founded the monastery in 1518 with a papal bull from Pope Leo X for the Order of Poor Clares. It later became a significant building occupied by Franciscans who shaped its current form.
The church contains a gilded wooden altarpiece decorated with spiral columns and saint figures that reflect the artistic skill of past craftspeople. Visitors can see this ornate decoration today and understand how the monastery served as a spiritual center for the community.
The entrance is located on Calle Duque de San German where visitors can access the premises and purchase traditional sweets made by resident monks. Check opening times beforehand since access and availability may vary depending on the season.
The cloister displays Mudejar architecture with wall paintings created by Clemente García Mures between 1759 and 1760 that blend local artistic traditions with religious imagery. These paintings remain visible today and offer a rare window into artistic activity from that period.
