Badajoz, Municipality in western Spain, near Portuguese border.
Badajoz sits on the banks of the Guadiana in southwestern Spain and spreads along the river. The old town is surrounded by Arab walls, above which the Alcazaba fortress rises.
Ibn Marwan founded the settlement in 875 on the remains of a Roman town called Civitas Pacis. It later developed into an important Moorish kingdom under the name Batalyoz.
In the city you can still see Moorish influences in the layout and building details of the old town. Local markets and shops display typical products from Extremadura such as Iberian ham and pottery.
The city serves as an important trade center in the southwest and offers many shopping opportunities along the main streets. Visitors can orient themselves best by starting from the river and heading north toward the fortress.
The cathedral combines Romanesque and Gothic building styles with a fortress-like structure that recalls defensive architecture. Inside there are Renaissance ornaments and Flemish tapestries.
