Castle of Nogales

Castle of Nogales, Medieval fortress in Nogales, Spain.

The Castle of Nogales is a fortification featuring a central keep rising approximately 35 meters (115 feet) high, with substantial masonry walls reinforced at the corners. Cylindrical towers mark each corner of the perimeter wall that surrounds the structure.

Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa initiated construction in 1458, and his son Gómez completed the fortification in 1464 by adding defensive features. This two-phase building process established it as a key stronghold in the area.

The Figueroa family coat of arms is displayed at the entrance, documenting the role of Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa in establishing this structure. These symbols reflect how the ruling family left their mark on the building.

Visiting requires advance planning due to limited weekend and holiday hours. Check the current schedule before your visit to ensure you can access the site when you want to arrive.

The interior of the keep displays Gothic windows and ribbed vaulting across three levels, showcasing elegant mastery. These architectural details are rarely seen together and reveal the sophistication built into this fortress.
