Villalba de los Barros Reservoir, embalse de la provincia de Badajoz
The Villalba de los Barros Reservoir is a dam in Badajoz Province completed in 2010 and covering about 343 hectares. Built across the Guadajira River, it can hold over 100 million cubic meters of water primarily to supply irrigation and drinking water for nearby communities and farms.
The dam was constructed between 2008 and 2010, making it a modern addition to the region's water management system. During construction, workers discovered several ancient archaeological sites that are now submerged beneath the reservoir's waters.
The reservoir serves as a vital water source for the surrounding communities and farmers, shaping daily life in the region. Local herders bring sheep to graze on the open fields, while people from nearby towns visit the waterside to relax and enjoy the landscape.
Access to the reservoir is mainly by road, with the N-432 being the main route from Villalba de los Barros. The landscape is flat and open with gentle slopes, making it easy to walk around and explore the waterside areas.
The dam stands about 45 meters tall and holds the ninth-largest water volume in the local basin, playing a crucial role in the region's water network despite its modest size. From the waterside, visitors can spot the distant castle of Feria on the horizon, adding a historical layer to the view.
