Church of la Purificación, Almendralejo, Gothic Catholic church in Almendralejo, Spain.
The Church of la Purificación is a Gothic church with a single hall-plan nave featuring ribbed vaulting and extensive fresco paintings on its interior walls and ceiling. The interior space is covered with murals that extend from floor to ceiling throughout the room.
Construction of this church began in 1494 over a previous structure and was completed in 1515. Further renovations continued until 1539 to achieve its current form.
The church holds fresco paintings created by Italian artists Octavio Bernardi and Giovanni Gritti in 1948. These wall murals shape how the interior feels and represent artistic collaboration between Spain and Italy.
The building stands in the town center on the church square and is easily reached on foot. It is best visited in the morning when natural light shines through the windows and illuminates the fresco paintings.
On the exterior stands a sculpture of the Peace Christ created by Juan de Ávalos, alongside an inscription honoring those who died in Spanish conflicts. This combination of artistic design and memorial function creates a space for reflection.
