Castillo de Alconchel

Castillo de Alconchel, Medieval castle in Alconchel, Spain.

Castillo de Alconchel is a medieval fortress on a hilltop with cylindrical towers, arrow slits, and a strong square keep at its center. The structure follows the natural shape of the hill and uses the terrain as part of its defensive design.

The fortress was built in the 12th century by Alfonso I of Portugal to defend the border region. It later passed between military orders including the Knights Templar and the Order of Alcantara.

The castle reflects medieval border fortification design, with its walls and towers showing how medieval builders approached defense against attacks. Visitors walking through it can see how strategic placement and construction methods served the needs of those who lived there.

You can reach the fortress via a marked path from the town of Alconchel, which sits about 45 kilometers from Badajoz. The hilltop location offers good views but requires some effort to climb.

The fortress cleverly uses the hill's natural shape, with its elongated form following the slope contours. This adaptation to the landscape was a smart defensive technique that made it harder to attack.
