Castle of Olivenza, Medieval fortress in Olivenza, Spain.
Castle of Olivenza is a medieval fortress in the center of the old town with a tall keep that rises above the surrounding buildings. The complex features thick walls from the 14th century and a series of vaulted ramps that lead to the summit.
The fortress was founded in 1258 by the Knights Templar and marked the beginning of Olivenza's settlement. Over the centuries it changed hands between Portugal and Spain through various conflicts and remains a symbol of the region's complex past.
The castle houses the González Santana Ethnographic Museum, displaying regional customs and traditional objects from the area. Visitors can explore how people lived and worked in this part of the region.
The fortress sits centrally in the old town and is easy to reach on foot, with access to the rooftop that offers views over the landscape. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since there are several flights of stairs and ramps to climb.
The fortress preserves original defensive features including towers with openings designed to repel attackers. Two circular structures frame the main gates and reveal the strategic planning of the original builders.
