Mercado Metálico, Metal market in Plaza Alta, Badajoz, Spain.
The Mercado Metálico is a rectangular market building with three spacious halls separated by cast iron columns. Natural light enters through ceiling windows, while a basement extends beneath the entire floor plan.
The building opened in 1899 and functioned as a marketplace for the city for many decades. In 1975 it closed and the market operation moved to a new location on the University of Extremadura campus.
The building displays the craftsmanship of the late 19th century, with shields of Castile, Leon, and Badajoz set in circular medallions throughout. These decorative elements reflect the regional identity woven into the structure itself.
The main entrance is accessed via a granite staircase that is easy to navigate. The structure is solidly built with clear internal divisions, making orientation straightforward inside.
The combination of granite and exposed brick with metal elements shows an innovative construction technique of the late 19th century. Large vertical windows and semicircular arches define the exterior and reflect the industrial design style of that era.
