Torre Valentina

Torre Valentina is a cylindrical defensive tower positioned directly on the shoreline south of San Antonio beach. The structure retains its original form with crenellations crowning its walls and stands as a notable example of coastal fortification architecture.

The tower originated as part of a network of coastal fortifications connecting multiple sites across the region to provide maritime defense. This interconnected system of defensive positions reflected a strategic approach to protecting the shoreline during different historical periods.

The Spanish government designated Torre Valentina as a Cultural Asset of National Interest, recognizing its architectural and historical value for the region.

The tower is easily visible from the shoreline and accessible from outside, but the interior lacks ground-level entrances and internal staircases. Visitors interested in viewing the upper chambers and levels should be aware this requires special equipment and preparation.

During the 1960s, the tower became part of an urban development project, with modern buildings constructed on its landward side. This unusual juxtaposition of ancient fortification and contemporary architecture offers a revealing contrast in how coastal cities evolved during that era.
