Refugi Josep Maria Blanc, Mountain hut in Peguera Valley, Espot, Spain.
Refugi Josep Maria Blanc is a mountain shelter in Peguera Valley at about 2,350 meters elevation near Estany Tort de Peguera lake within Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The facility accommodates around 60 guests and includes hot showers, bathrooms, meal services, and wireless internet available for an additional fee.
Construction of this shelter started in 1935, faced interruption during the Spanish Civil War, and resumed in 1941 before opening in October 1943. It became the oldest refuge in the national park's hiking network.
The shelter serves as a gathering point where hikers exchange stories and advice about trails in the surrounding peaks. Visitors often spend time here observing the landscape and connecting with others who share a love of mountain exploration.
The shelter is best reached by hiking trails from Espot that lead directly to the location. Visitors should be prepared for rapid weather changes at this elevation and bring warm clothing and proper footwear for mountain conditions.
When the shelter operates without permanent staff, it maintains four emergency beds equipped with mattresses, blankets, and a radio system for communication. This allows hikers to find shelter in unexpected situations even when the main facility is unmanned.
