Sant Llorenç del Mont, Romanesque monastery in Albanyà, Spain

Sant Llorenç del Mont is a Romanesque monastery located in Albanyà, with ruins positioned on a mountain's southern slope overlooking Beuda in the Garrotxa region. The remains show a three-nave basilica with semicircular apses, the main architectural elements that defined medieval religious structures in Catalonia.

The monastery first appears in written records through a charter from Charles the Bald in 871, documenting it as a property belonging to the Sant Aniol d'Aguja monastery. In the early 1300s, Abbot Bernat expanded the site significantly by constructing a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary atop the mountain between 1311 and 1318.

The monastery displays the typical layout of medieval Catalan religious buildings with a three-nave basilica and semicircular apses. Visitors can observe these structural elements today and sense how such places functioned as centers of spiritual life.

The site sits on mountainous terrain with steep paths, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are needed to visit. Limited facilities are available on-site, making it best to come prepared for an outdoor experience.

The site attracts hikers drawn by the mountain walk, which rewards them with views across the Garrotxa landscape as much as with the ruins themselves. This blend of historical remains and natural surroundings creates a layered experience that deepens throughout the visit.
