Embalse de Piedra Aguda

Embalse de Piedra Aguda, embalse en el río Guadiana

Embalse de Piedra Aguda is a large reservoir built on the Olivenza River in Badajoz Province, serving to collect and store water for surrounding communities and agricultural use. The concrete dam stretches over 200 meters in length and rises more than 30 meters high, creating a calm water surface that reflects the sky and surrounding vegetation.

The dam was constructed in 1956 and created a significant change in the landscape by forming an artificial water body to support irrigation and local water supply. This concrete structure became an important infrastructure project that shaped how the region manages its water resources.

The reservoir serves as a gathering place for local communities who engage in fishing and outdoor recreation along its shores. The surrounding eucalyptus and holm oak forests form part of the everyday landscape where people spend leisure time and connect with nature.

The reservoir is easily accessible by road, located about 7 kilometers from the town of Olivenza, and offers walking paths along the shoreline at various access points. Visiting during the cooler months is advisable since summers become very hot, and the peaceful setting makes it suitable for leisurely outdoor activities.

The reservoir is home to several fish species including carp, barbel, and bream that attract anglers from across the region. The rocky formations in the area contain interesting mineral deposits like hematite and calcite that have been of geological interest to researchers.
