The Sireno, Aluminium sculpture in Porta do Sol, Spain.

El Sireno is an aluminium sculpture by Francisco Leiro that rises from two black granite columns in Porta do Sol and stands approximately 7 meters tall. The form merges human and aquatic characteristics and serves as a key visual anchor where several pedestrian paths meet.

The sculpture was created in 1991, marking a turning point in Vigo's artistic development during that period. The installation arrived when the city was reshaping its public spaces through contemporary artworks.

The work embodies Vigo's connection to the ocean through its depiction of a being caught between human and marine forms. This figure becomes part of the everyday landscape as people move through the central square.

The sculpture sits at the intersection of several walking routes and is easy to reach on foot. The open area provides clear sightlines, making it simple to find your bearings and view the work from multiple angles.

The work pioneered the use of polished aluminium in large-scale European public sculpture, setting new standards for public installations at that time. This innovative material choice created a smooth, reflective surface that interacts with the light and coastal weather conditions.
