Puente de los Poetas, Modern bridge across Douro River in Zamora, Spain.
The Puente de los Poetas is a modern bridge spanning the Douro with six supporting sections and space for both vehicles and pedestrians. Its design uses prestressed concrete technology to achieve its structural form.
This bridge was completed in 2013 to meet the need for a new modern crossing of the river. Its construction enabled the old stone bridge to later become pedestrian-only.
The bridge takes its name to honor several regional poets rather than just the local poet Claudio Rodriguez. This naming choice came about through conversations with his widow and reflects how poetry matters to the region.
The bridge connects several neighborhoods and serves as the main entrance to southwest Zamora. The structure is easy to walk across and accommodates both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
The bridge cost around 16 million euros and was designed by engineer Javier Manterola. His design shows how modern engineering techniques were applied to create a new connection for the city.
