Castillos de Valderas y Museo de Arte en Vidrio de Alcorcón
Castillos de Valderas y Museo de Arte en Vidrio de Alcorcón, Art museum in Alcorcón, Spain
The museum occupies a restored early 20th-century castle complex with three separate buildings housing contemporary glass art pieces. The collection displays installations, sculptures, and decorative objects that explore different artistic approaches and glassworking methods.
The San José de Valderas Castle was built in 1917 by architect Luis Sainz de los Terreros as a residence for the Marquis of Valderas. The structure later transformed into an art museum dedicated to contemporary glass art.
The museum celebrates contemporary glass art within a historic castle, becoming a significant venue for artists exploring this medium in the region. Visitors encounter how creators work with glass through innovative and traditional techniques that transform the material into expressive pieces.
The museum is open on weekdays with varying hours throughout the day, and admission is free for all visitors. Group visits require advance booking due to limited capacity, making it best to arrange a tour ahead of time.
The initial collection grew from a visit by a Japanese art collector in the 1990s who later donated dozens of glass pieces. This generous gift laid the foundation for what became the museum's core holdings.
