Cueva de Atxurra, Prehistoric cave in Berriatua, Spain
The Atxurra Cave extends over two interconnected levels, featuring a vast network of galleries containing numerous animal engravings and paintings.
Archaeologists discovered the cave entrance in 1882 during road construction, leading to extensive excavations that revealed human occupation dating back 29,000 years.
The cave walls display 113 animal figures, including horses, bison, and deer, created using different techniques such as engravings and carbon black paintings.
The cave entrance remains closed to protect the resident bat colonies, requiring special permits and arrangements for scientific research visits.
Atxurra contains the largest collection of Paleolithic animal figures discovered in the Basque Country, with some dating between 12,500 and 14,500 years.
