Cueva de Atxurra

Cueva de Atxurra is a prehistoric cave with two connected levels where visitors find an extensive network of galleries. The walls throughout contain animal engravings and paintings created in different ways.

The cave was discovered in 1882 when workers built a road through the area and archaeologists later excavated it. Evidence shows that people visited and used this site across many millennia.

The cave walls display 113 animal figures, including horses, bison, and deer, created using different techniques such as engravings and carbon black paintings.

The cave entrance remains closed to protect the resident bat colonies that inhabit the space. Visits are only possible with special permits and arrangements for research purposes.

The walls contain around 113 animal figures, with some dating back 14,500 years and featuring rare horse and bison motifs. This represents one of the largest concentrations of Paleolithic animal art in the region.
