Govern Militar, Military government building in Gothic Quarter, Barcelona, Spain.
The Govern Militar is a neoclassical building in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter featuring fluted columns, Corinthian capitals, and carved pediments across its rectangular structure. Two interior courtyards and ornamental balustrades define the building's refined classical design.
Designed in 1927 by military engineers Josep Sans i Forcadas and Pompeu Martí, the building replaced a former Franciscan convent on the site. It was constructed to house War Ministry facilities.
The building mirrors the design of Barcelona's Llotja de Mar and displays decorative concrete sculptures by Felipe Coscolla along its crown balustrade. These works feature allegorical figures representing military virtues positioned around the structure's perimeter.
Located at the intersection of Passeig de Colom and Portal de la Pau Square, the building sits in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. Its classical facade is easily visible from the street and provides a calm spot to observe the architectural details.
The building's four sides display allegorical stone sculptures strategically positioned at corners and transitions along the facade. These works often go unnoticed by visitors focused on the classical columns and other details.
