Muelle de Churruca, Maritime dock in Las Arenas, Spain.
Muelle de Churruca is a waterfront dock that runs along the right bank of the Nervion River mouth, linking Las Arenas Beach to the Vizcaya Bridge. The structure includes two separate pedestrian pathways divided by gardens, with open bicycle access throughout.
Engineer Evaristo de Churruca designed this dock in the late 1800s to improve port facilities and allow larger ships to reach Bilbao's harbor. The project was a key step in upgrading the region's maritime capacity.
The entrance features an obelisk showing a figure facing the sea, symbolizing human strength against natural forces. This sculpture shapes how visitors experience the space and tells of the relationship between people and the water.
The dock is easy to reach and well-furnished with wide pedestrian paths that offer open movement. Garden areas provide stopping points during walks, and proximity to the beach and bridge makes several sights reachable in one visit.
Local residents called it La Mojijonera because of the numerous mussels that gathered between the dock stones, providing ingredients for regional dishes. This local name reflects the long link between the place and traditional cooking.
