Castillo de Biniés

Castillo de Biniés, Medieval castle in Canal de Berdún, Spain.

Castillo de Biniés is a rectangular fortress perched on a cliff above the Veral River, with four defensive towers arranged around its structure. At its center sits an open courtyard that serves as the main gathering space.

The fortress began as a defensive tower during medieval times to protect the valley below. In the 16th century, the Urriés family renovated it extensively, transforming it into a proper residence.

The chapel inside displays Renaissance paintings with Latin inscriptions honoring Mary Magdalene, reflecting local religious traditions of the era. This ornate decoration shows how important the fortress was as a family residence.

The fortress is clearly visible from all entry points to the town of Biniés and rises prominently above surrounding structures. The hilltop location means visitors should prepare for uneven ground and steep paths when exploring the site.

Certain ornate wooden ceilings from the Renaissance period were sold and transported to California, where they were installed in an American mansion. This shows how valuable the family's artworks were and how they traveled across the world.
