The remains of Torrecid castle include seven room foundations and low masonry walls covered with mud at an elevation of 663 meters.
The fortified camp served as El Cid's base for fifteen weeks in 1081, hosting three hundred knights and three hundred foot soldiers during their campaign.
The castle's existence validates the historical accuracy of the medieval epic poem Cantar de Mio Cid, connecting literature with physical evidence.
The site provides clear views of the Jalón river valley, including the locations of ancient Alcocer and the present-day towns of Terrer and Ateca.
