Cuartel del Carmen

Cuartel del Carmen is a former convent and barracks complex in Seville's Old Town with multiple wings and courtyards displaying both religious and military architectural features. The compound combines narrow monastic corridors with open courtyards where music and theater classes now take place.

Founded as a Carmelite convent in 1358, it was converted into a military facility in the early 1800s during the French occupation. This transformation from religious to military use marked a turning point in the building's long history.

Since 2002, it houses the Superior Conservatory of Music and School of Dramatic Arts, shaping Seville's cultural life through music and theater education. The daily presence of students studying music and drama fills the historic spaces with creative activity.

Located in the narrow streets of Seville's Old Town, it is reached on foot through winding medieval lanes. Visitors should know it functions as an active educational campus, so some areas may have restricted access during classes.

The music academy uses some original rooms from the convent era, where you can still hear the acoustics of old chapels during practice sessions. This blending of prayer and music within the same walls across centuries creates a distinct quality to the space.
