Plaza de España is a green space of about 4 hectares with walkways that wind through planted areas and connect different zones throughout the park. A central fountain marks the heart of this layout.
The park took shape in 1872 when workers filled the dried riverbed of the Río de Oro using soil excavated during construction of a new waterway. This transformation created a new green space in the growing city.
The park serves as the main gathering place for locals and visitors, where you see families strolling and children playing on weekends. It functions as the green heart of the city and shapes how people experience Melilla's public spaces.
The park is easy to reach on foot and offers plenty of shaded spots under trees, especially on hot days. The pathways are well-maintained and allow for relaxed walks across the entire grounds.
Until 1945 a temple stood at the center of the park before being replaced by a water fountain that survived until the early 1950s. These shifts in architecture show how the site's purpose and appearance evolved over time.
