Cine Metropol, Art Deco movie theater in Valencia, Spain
Cine Metropol is a movie theater building that blends Art Deco and rationalist design in Valencia. It features geometric decorations throughout, a glass viewing area on the second floor, and coffered ceilings with ornate detailing in the main halls.
The building was originally a residential house constructed in 1882 before architect Francisco Javier Goerlich redesigned it as a cinema in 1934. This transformation demonstrates how older structures were adapted to serve entertainment needs during the early modern period.
The cinema served as a gathering place for artists and thinkers during the Spanish Second Republic, drawing visitors interested in culture and ideas. The interior spaces reflected the openness of this era to new artistic movements and international exchange.
Entry to the building is through the main ground-level entrance that leads visitors into the foyer and hall areas. The second-floor glass area offers a different viewpoint, though access may depend on current opening hours and whether the cinema is showing films.
The ornate coffered ceilings and many decorative interior elements have never been officially catalogued by institutions, remaining largely undocumented. This gap in recorded knowledge makes the building a lesser-known gem among Art Deco structures worth exploring more closely.
