Escola Pia de Sarrià, School building in Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova, Barcelona, Spain
Escola Pia de Sarrià is a school building in the Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova neighborhood of Barcelona. It has a U-shaped layout with a central body and two side wings, and a tall clock tower rises above the main entrance.
The school was designed by Eduard Mercader i Sacanella and built between 1893 and 1894 as a boarding school for the Escolapis. In 1929 it received the title of Royal from King Alfonso XIII, and after the Civil War it returned to its educational mission.
The school is run by the Escolapis, a religious order dedicated to education, and it serves students from early childhood through secondary school. Its name, Escola Pia, reflects this long teaching tradition, and the building remains a familiar landmark for local families.
The building sits on Carrer de la Immaculada and is easy to reach on foot from the nearby streets. Visitors can admire the facade from the sidewalk, but the interior is only open during school hours and for special events.
The clock tower rests on an iron framework built using techniques from the Eiffel brothers, a detail that is easy to miss from the street. Also, the original design planned towers at the ends of the side wings, but they were never completed.
