Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is a religious building in La Frontera on the island of El Hierro with a detached bell tower positioned on Joapira volcano. The tower displays lime-colored walls with ochre trim and stands as an independent structure beside the main church.

The bell tower underwent multiple renovations throughout its history, with the current structure completed in 1952 under Federico Padrón's influence. These restoration works shaped the tower into its present late Baroque form.

The church is dedicated to Candlemas, a celebration that holds particular importance in this community. Residents view the bells as a symbol connecting them across the valley.

A stone staircase with roughly 20 steps leads up to the bell tower and requires steady footing. Visitors should bring water and sun protection, especially during warm weather or windy conditions at this elevated location.

The bell tower stands independently on Joapira volcano, a location chosen to optimize sound projection across the valley's scattered settlements. This spatial arrangement is uncommon in the island's religious architecture and reflects a practical solution to the terrain's challenges.
