Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, Valverde, Baroque church in Valverde, Spain
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is a baroque church in Valverde featuring three naves and twin bell towers that rise to 24 meters (79 ft) in height. A sixteen-faced lantern tower crowns the structure, creating a distinctive profile.
Construction of the current building began in 1768 to replace an original chapel from the 16th century that was destroyed by earthquakes in 1704 and 1705. The baroque reconstruction represents the community's rebuilding efforts following these natural disasters.
The church holds important religious artworks created by Canarian painters such as Miguel Arroyo, Luján Pérez, and Rodríguez de la Oliva displayed within its stone walls. These pieces reflect the artistic tradition that developed on the islands during the colonial period.
Access to the tower involves climbing several steps, with facilities available for wheelchair users and a modest fee for entry. Allow yourself enough time to climb at your own pace and take in the views from the top.
A French clock donated by Dr. Gaspar Jerónimo Quintero in 1867 hangs in the tower and rings on New Year's Eve. The community gathers to hear the bells welcome the new year during this special night.
